The Inc. 5000 is a list of the fastest-growing, private companies in the United States, compiled using three-year revenue growth rates. Underground Elephant ranked on this list in both 2013 (at #695) and 2014 (at #1162). Interestingly, of the 5000 companies that made the list in 2014, 81 of them are located right here in San Diego–earning our city the fifth highest municipal ranking in the US.
Here are the top-10 cities (along with their respective number of Inc. 5000 companies):
Our high ranking is likely surprising to many residents and non-residents alike, but it is no reason to be complacent. Despite San Diego’s Port, its proximity to the border with Mexico, its amazing weather, and its major industries (defense, biotech, communication technologies, tourism, beer making, to name a few); many would still say that San Diego continues to punch below its entrepreneurial weight and potential for economic development.
However, there is also the growing sense that the city and region are progressing toward an economic tipping point–and the 81 San Diego companies on the Inc. 5000 list are a testament to that sense of momentum and tangible results. To understand more about the City’s history and contextualize upcoming priorities, I recommend you read Mary Walshok’s book, “Invention and Reinvention: The Evolution of San Diego’s Innovation Economy”.
Many startups, high-growth companies, innovators, and founders are proud to call San Diego home–and they are starting to cooperate to create a broader vision for a vibrant innovative community in San Diego. The 81 high-growth San Diego companies on the Inc. 5000 list, for example, are all doing their part to shine a spotlight on the future of the innovation economy in San Diego, both downtown and countywide.
Furthermore, collaboration between thought leaders on the Torrey Pines Mesa (near La Jolla) and Downtown is increasing markedly, as are the efforts of organizations such as the Downtown San Diego Partnership, Connect.org, the University of California San Diego, and Mayor Faulconer’s Administration. This connectivity is crucial to architecting a story, a roadmap, and a vision for technology and innovation in San Diego. Underground Elephant is honored to be a part of the next chapter of San Diego’s evolution, and is committed to making this vision a reality.
